SLEEP AND ITS DISORDERS

leep disorders are a common problem with a solution. Sleep deprivation interferes with work, when driving and social activities of a person.

It is essential to understand the importance of sleep and what are the factors that affect it. Studies by scientists say that sleep is necessary for survival.

There are over 70 types of sleep disorders. Many of these can be successfully controlled once diagnosed.

Sleep deprivation has detrimental effects on the immune system. Also, sleep is necessary for the proper functioning of the nervous system. During sleep, the body is inactive but the brain is very active. Only recently, researchers have begun to understand how sleep affects the daily functions and physical and mental health.

Each person's amount of sleep depends on many factors, including age. Infants usually require about 16 hours a day, while teenagers need about 9 hours a day. For most adults, 7 or 8 hours seems to be the best amount of sleep, although some people might need only 5 hours a day, others up to 10 hours a day.

The most common types of sleep disorders are:

  • Insomnia
  • Sleep apnea (snoring)
  • Restless legs syndrome
  • Narcolepsy

When we do not get enough sleep, we feel sleepy and unable to concentrate. This can cause memory problems, clumsiness and difficulty performing mathematical calculations. If we continue to deprive of sleep, we begin to suffer hallucinations and mood swings.

If you have ever suffered from one or more of the following, you should seek help:

  • Have you noticed that you snore or your partner has told you snore a lot?
  • Have you noticed you or your partner has told you stop breathing during sleep?
  • Have you or your partner awake with the feeling that lacks air, drowning?
  • Do you wake up in the morning with the feeling of not having slept well, that you did not rest?
  • Do you feel sometimes very sleepy during the day?
  • Have you noticed that your energy levels and concentration and memory have fallen during the day?
  • Are you hypertensive? Have you suffered a heart attack or stroke?
