Seven habits to cope with daily stress without losing your health
Who hasn't skipped meals because of unfinished work or a child who urgently needs help? Or woken up tired because they didn't sleep well or suffered from insomnia? Who hasn't spent the weekend completing a request from the boss? Or reached for a snack to stave off hunger until the end of a long Zoom call that coincided with lunch?
Our daily lives put us under pressure, and what we call 'modern life' demands a fast-paced life. And yet, "it's possible to achieve a holistic lifestyle that keeps us healthy," says internist Daniel Castillo , a physician at Metropolitan Hospital.
- Thinking about yourself is essential and is Dr. Castillo's first recommendation. "There's always a tendency to prioritize work; we give it our all; but what happens if you get sick and can't be there anymore?"
- Find recreational activities that take us away from stress and work: sports, bike rides, a walk. The important thing: make sure they're enjoyable.
- Fixed meal times and a balanced diet are ideal; but if you ever have to skip breakfast or lunch, choose quality foods: a lunch with some protein and no white flour, sugar, or processed foods.
- Increasing levels of non-exercise physical activity is key. To get from one floor to another, for example, prefer the stairs; or if ordering delivery, get up to pick it up in person.
- Exercise snacks are the best allies for coping with long hours in front of a screen, says the internist. It involves taking a break from work every hour to dedicate 5 to 10 minutes to physical activity such as walking or stretching. If it's every two hours, the snack should last between 10 and 15 minutes.
- Don't have time to exercise or play a sport? Here's Dr. Castillo's suggestion: "At least 10 to 15 minutes of functional exercise a day—preferably for muscle building—and that will help you for a lifetime."
- Get 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night, ensuring restful sleep that restores your energy. Adequate rest is key to both mental and physical health; it even prevents weight gain.
