La emisión de carbono se produce por la combustión de varias actividades humanas como las industriales y limita la calidad del aire que respiramos por la cantidad de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI) que se emanan a la atmósfera.

El Hospital Metropolitano en su compromiso con el cuidado del medio ambiente, ha identificado algunas fuentes de emisión de GEI para reducir su producción directa e indirecta a través de varias actividades conjuntas, partiendo por la toma de conciencia en toda la organización sobre la importancia de ejecutar acciones más concretas para obtener el sello de Carbono Neutralidad.

Por ejemplo, se invertirá en nuevas fuentes de energía, migrando paulatinamente de la electricidad hacia la construcción de un sistema de paneles solares para generar energía propia y llegar a la autosostenibilidad.

Entre otras acciones, se realizará el mantenimiento adecuado de todas las fuentes de combustible y el entrenamiento del personal en la correcta clasificación de todos los desechos aprovechables, orgánicos, comunes e infecciosos.

Estos actos de responsabilidad ambiental nos ayudarán a ser más eficientes en el uso de los recursos y a reducir el 10.1% de toneladas de la emisión del carbono en los próximos tres años.

Además, como parte de este compromiso, se adquirirán bonos para apoyar a tres proyectos ambientales de gran envergadura, ubicados en Sudamérica y la India promovidos por la Organización de las Naciones Unidas.

Con ello, el Hospital Metropolitano contribuirá con un nuevo Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) para el bienestar de sus pacientes, la comunidad y el medio ambiente.

The Metropolitan Hospital has incorporated two new PET SCAN studies in addition to FDG (Fluorodeoxyglucose). The first study is the PET SCAN with Gallio PSMA, which allows the monitoring of prostate cancer and the second is the PET SCAN with Gallio DOTATATE, which facilitates the monitoring of malignant neuroendocrine tumors, which are not usually visualized with the FDG radiopharmaceutical.

We have managed to synthesize these radiopharmaceuticals, thus becoming the only Hospital in Ecuador to offer PSMA PET AND DOTATATE PET in addition to FDG PET CT. Today the Metropolitan Hospital can perform procedures of this level to the Ecuadorian community, as well as to patients from neighboring countries.

To produce these injectable radiopharmaceuticals, state-of-the-art equipment and chemical, bacteriological and radioactive quality control equipment were acquired, which comply with strict pharmacological and sterility standards, with strict adherence to radiological protection standards and standards of good pharmaceutical preparation practices. .

This new historical milestone represents a significant advance not only for the Metropolitan Hospital but for the country in the field of PET Imaging studies, implementing cutting-edge technology in the fight against cancer.

First robotic surgery in Latin America for vaginal reconstruction in a 5-year-old girl

Samantha, a 5-year-old girl who was born with Persistent Urogenital Sinus, an anomaly that affects the natural connection between the urethra and the vagina. The little girl was diagnosed in a public hospital, and required a series of surgical interventions to resolve this condition. Her parents had long searched for an institution that could help their little daughter.

To resolve Samantha's complex case, a series of surgical interventions were required, including robotic surgery. These procedures, with their respective examinations and medical checkups, were financed thanks to the alliance that the Metropolitan Hospital maintains with the Metrofraternidad Foundation.

The little girl was treated by Dr. Jorge García, a pediatric robotic urological surgeon at the Metropolitan Hospital and a volunteer doctor at the Metrofraternidad Foundation. During the first diagnostic examinations, Dr. García found a giant cyst that he assumed to be the vagina or deformed uterus, so he performed a first surgical intervention to make a hole in the abdomen and remove the urinary tube.

After several medical studies, Dr. García scheduled two new highly specialized surgical procedures known as “Vaginal Neocanal” and “Urethroplasty”, to achieve reconstruction and achieve individualization of the channels between the vagina and the urinary tract, also creating a neovagina with a tissue graft.

For this complex procedure, the Da Vinci Robot was used, a surgical instrument that increases the surgeon's ability to operate with precision, dexterity and providing an exceptionally clear view of the patient's anatomy. This is the first time in Latin America that the Da Vinci System is used for vaginal reconstruction surgery in a 5-year-old girl.

Currently, Samantha is in the process of recovery and it is hoped that this reconstruction will automatically control her urinary tract diseases, thus improving her quality of life.

Donating blood can save up to three lives

Therefore, we invite you this Friday, June 14 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. to donate blood at the Blood Bank of the Metropolitan Hospital, located on Av. Mariana de Jesús y Nicolás Arteta, next to the Hospital del Día.
Donating blood is one of the greatest acts of altruism among human beings. Blood is one of the few elements that humans cannot yet construct or manufacture artificially and the only source to obtain it is through donation.
Blood is vital for patients with cancer problems and people who have suffered some type of serious accident. One pint of blood can save up to three lives because it can be divided into three components: red blood cells, platelets and cryoprecipitates, which are used for different medical and surgical procedures.
Donating blood brings many benefits for the donor, because before extracting it, a quick health check is done to measure pressure, temperature, pulse, know the hemoglobin levels and infectious tests are done to determine the general condition of the person. . In addition, it improves circulation and burns up to 650 calories.
However, it is recommended that patients who have had cancer or have undergone surgery in the last two months and are minors do not donate.
If there are people who got tattoos in the last year, underwent acupuncture with non-disposable needles in the last four months, have flu infections or are undergoing dental treatment in the last three days, they will not be candidates for donation either.

Type 2 diabetes can be reversible

Diabetes, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by high levels of glucose or sugar in the blood, which over time leads to serious damage to the body. The woman with cancer is a warrior, extremely brave who fights every day against her own fears and overcomes them. On October 19, World Breast Cancer Day is celebrated and it is important to know that there are multiple risk factors for this disease and not all of them must be met for breast cancer to appear.
A woman who has had her mother, sister or grandmother with this type of cancer has up to three times the risk than the rest of the general population. Among other factors, there is obesity, inadequate management of hormones in perimenopause (menopausal transition) and menopause, the use of contraceptives without medical consultation for a long period, nulliparity, that is, a woman not having children and as a consequence the absence of breastfeeding, which reduces the probability of the appearance of cancer.
Women with advanced stages of breast cancer can have a remission, that is, the disease disappears or stops and they lead a good quality of life with treatments. However, the incidence of its appearance is high, becoming the first cause of cancer diagnosis, especially in the city of Quito, according to the annual reports of the National Tumor Registry.
To prevent breast cancer, the first thing to do is identify if you have risk factors and, secondly, to have an annual check-up. Self-examination outside of what you think is not always the best option, because when a nodule is palpated, it can be at least a centimeter or larger, which means there is no early detection.
If the woman is under 38 years old and has no factors, an annual gynecological check-up will probably be enough. However, if there are risk factors, it is important to have ultrasounds from the ages of 18 to 38 to evaluate the mammary glands and from the age of 38 mammograms should be included.

First Robotic Surgery for the youngest patient in Ecuador

El pasado 28 de diciembre del 2021, se realizó por primera vez una cirugía robótica a una niña de 4 meses de edad, quien es la más joven en Ecuador y se estima que en América Latina, en ser intervenida con esta tecnología de alto nivel. La paciente es oriunda de la ciudad de Cuenca y nació con estenosis en la unión pieloureteral.
Esta es una patología normalmente congénita que consiste en una estrechez en la unión de la pelvis renal con el uréter (conducto que va del riñón a la vejiga) que impide un correcto vaciado de la orina ocasionando hidronefrosis. La unión pieloureteral es el segmento de uréter más próxima entre la pelvis y el comienzo de este.
Gracias a esta tecnología y a la experiencia de sus médicos, esta cirugía de alta complejidad fue mínimamente invasiva y con una precisión exacta en los cortes, lo que significó para la paciente tan solo dos días de estadía en el hospital antes de recibir su alta, en un procedimiento normal esto tardaría aproximadamente 7 días de recuperación. Cabe recalcar que el Hospital Metropolitano es el único hospital privado en contar con este robot.
Este es un hito para los avances tecnológicos en la medicina ecuatoriana que beneficiará la vida de la pequeña paciente.

Our Cancer Center has renewed its specialized technology with the new Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerator

As of this Thursday, January 20, 2022, our new Linear Accelerator is now operational, as a great advance in high-precision cancer treatments. This is how the first patient has benefited from the advantages that this modern system brings, which makes it a more precise, faster and less aggressive device with healthy tissues close to the injuries.
The Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerator manages to more accurately locate all the patient's internal structures, thanks to very high quality images in real time during the treatment. In this way, error due to movements is minimized, in accordance with the highest international standards and the best technology available on the market.

- Less duration and number of sessions. The high competence of the professional team of the Cancer Center, together with this modern technology, allows the Metropolitan Hospital to continue at the forefront of this type of treatments, in accordance with the global trend in terms of reduction in the number of sessions with equal therapeutic effectiveness. as well as reducing our patients' machine time.
