Obstruction of the respiratory pathway

Between the multiple causes of respiratory difficulty (dyspnea) and even respiratory arrest (apnea), the most common are usually due to obstruction of the respiratory pathway:

Conscious patients:

  • Chocking (usually hold their hands against their throat).
  • Foreign body airway obstruction.

Unconscious patients:

  • Tongue dropping to the posterior wall of the pharynx.
  • Vomit, secretion.

Patients with dentures.

Stomach dilatation and bloating.

Vomit, regurgitation, phlegm and secretions.
