Obstruction of the respiratory pathway
Between the multiple causes of respiratory difficulty (dyspnea) and even respiratory arrest (apnea), the most common are usually due to obstruction of the respiratory pathway:
Conscious patients:
- Chocking (usually hold their hands against their throat).
- Foreign body airway obstruction.
Unconscious patients:
- Tongue dropping to the posterior wall of the pharynx.
- Vomit, secretion.
